He started running almost twenty years ago and Dan Pihlainen, Radio Broadcasting Professor/Coordinator, has always dreamed of doing a race in Finland. He crossed that item off his bucket list last Saturday when he laced up his running shoes outside the Helsinki Olympic Stadium and, along with almost 5-thousand others, ran a 42 kilometre route around the city. Dan has completed more than 25 marathons but Finland is special. It’s where his father was born before immigrating to Canada in the 1930’s. Pihlainen wore a t-shirt with a large Canadian flag. “People were encouraging me chanting “Go Canada Go!””
There were a few surprises. The start time was 3 in the afternoon, and there was more than water and Gatorade being offered at the refreshment stops. “Seeing four large plastic bins at the water station that were filled with pickle spears was a little unusual,” Pihlainen said.
Pihlainen found time to mix a little work related fun into his Finland visit by touring the YLE Radio Lapin studios in the northern town of Rovaniemi. Dan’s Finnish wasn’t good enough to go on the air but he did get his picture taken and posted to the station’s Facebook page.
