Algonquin College is participating in Doors Open Ottawa, taking place Saturday June 1 and Sunday June 2 from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. at many locations across the city.

Doors Open Ottawa is the region’s largest heritage event, unlocking over 100 of the area’s most architecturally interesting and historically significant buildings, many of which are not normally open to the public on the first weekend in June, annually. For the past 10 years, like a rite of spring, over 60,000 attendees jump at this unique opportunity to see the interior of some of the city’s finest urban and rural buildings.

Opened in September 2011, The Algonquin Centre for Construction Excellence (ACCE) brings the next generation of carpenters, plumbers, civil engineering technologists, interior designers, and many other trades and professions under a single, green roof. The centre is a showcase for sustainable construction practices and superior craftsmanship, and serves as a one-of-a-kind living laboratory that demonstrates what is possible through innovative design, construction, maintenance and operation. Some of the building’s features include:

  • A five-story biowall made of living plants that filters the air, providing oxygen to the atrium space and all five connected floors
  • Built-in sensors that provide real-time diagnostics via on-site LCD screens and a unique website, allowing students to monitor the building’s temperature, humidity, air quality, structural load, and more
  • A large green roof
  • Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Platinum certified building
